WHMIS in the Warehouse
When hazardous and chemical products are present in the workplace, WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems) ensures the utmost in safety is implemented. Below is some information regarding WHMIS.
Safety within the workplace
WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) is a system that provides information regarding hazardous materials that are used in workplaces in Canada. Information regarding the hazardous materials is provided by the use of labels, material safety data sheets (MSDS) and worker education programs. MSDSs are provided by the supplier of the hazardous materials which is passed on to the employer and workers.
Providing information to employees
WHMIS was created in response to providing Canadians information about hazardous materials in the workplace. Coming into contact with hazardous products can contribute/cause critical health effects. Not only can these products impact health but they can cause fires and/or explosions. WHMIS assists in preventing any health impacts caused by hazardous materials and any fire/explosion incidents. Standards are set to ensure the correct type and amount of information is provided to employees. Therefore, this will reduce accidents and health illnesses that are caused hazardous materials. WHMIS was developed in cooperation with labour, industry, federal, provincial and territorial governments (Ontario Ministry of Labour, 2016). Also, it is put into effect with federal and provincial laws. Currently, WHMIS is experiencing an important change from the original WHMIS 1988 to a revised WHMIS 2015.
WHMIS is important information to workplace safety that provides:
- Employees required information about hazardous products within the workplace
- Proper safety precautions and measures
