Moving Towards Sustainable Logistics

Last month, we discussed sustainable logistics and the benefits they have in the supply chain. Some may be hesitant to implement sustainable practices in the supply chain and may view sustainability as another costly initiative. However, this is untrue. Sustainable logistics improve efficiency, productivity and are environmentally conscious. This can appeal to consumers and supply chain professionals who are looking to reduce their carbon footprint.

Is there a difference between going green and sustainability?

The word “green” gets tossed around as companies are looking to become more environmentally friendly and pursue eco-friendly initiatives. Some may view the word sustainability the same as green however, there is a difference between the two terms. The term “green” is a general term that focuses on business practices and reducing environmental impacts. It does not take into consideration financial or social benefits. Whereas, sustainability covers environmental, social and financial responsibility and benefits.

Sustainability: Improving the future of the environment

Turning towards sustainable logistics can improve the way operations are completed and are environmentally beneficial for the future. It can be simple to include some strategies for sustainable logistics. An example would be that brokers and 3PLs can include freight companies that implement sustainable solutions. This assists in ensuring freight shipments reduce their carbon footprint. To ensure sustainable practices are up to standards, implementing long-standing goals and using key performance indicators to measure performance. Determine what areas to target and measure these areas by using metrics. Another example is using technology that can assist in sustainable logistics. There is technology that plans for the most efficient truck route, which results in less distance that is traveled in turn reduces costs and reduces carbon emissions.

Implementing sustainable practices

The first step towards sustainability is believing that these initiatives will improve your business. Sustainability in the supply chain is not a trend that will fade over time. It is recognized as a way to decrease costs and reduce a company’s environmental impact. Sustainability is an ongoing process and will provide significant benefits for the future.
