Fun and Not-So-Fun Facts about St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday celebrating Saint Patrick and Irish heritage. It is also a time in which people don green garb and drink – safely, of course! Many celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, but not all know who St. Patrick was.
Saint Patrick, born in Britain, was taken by Irish raiders to Ireland and enslaved. Eventually, Patrick would escape and go back to Britain. Later, he would go back to Ireland by his own free will because of a vision he had from God. Patrick returned to the Emerald Isle this time as a Christian missionary and taught literacy and provided leadership to churches throughout Ireland.

- 13 million pints of Guinness will be consumed worldwide on St. Patrick’s Day.
- Cabbage shipments increase by 70% during St. Patrick’s week. This is because many choose to eat the traditional Irish dish of corned beef and cabbage.
- It takes approximately 40 lb of dye to turn Chicago’s River green.
- You have a 1 in 10,000 chance of finding a four-leaf clover.
Not-so-fun facts
- 266 drunk driving casualties from 2010 to 2014 St. Patrick’s Days.
- 80% of fatal St. Patrick’s Day car crashes involve a driver whose blood alcohol level is 2 times the legal limit.
And on that depressing note, we wish you a safe weekend. Be vigilant on the road. There may be some irresponsible people on the road, thinking that they can drive perfectly fine even though they’ve had a few green drinks. Green beer has the same amount of alcohol as normally coloured beer.
