Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations

TDG (Transportation of Dangerous Goods) is important in the transportation of chemical/hazardous goods. These regulations assist first responders in the event of a leak or spill of dangerous goods during transportation.

What is TDG?

The function of TDG is to promote safety when dangerous goods are in transportation. The regulations put in place set the safety standards and requirements for shipping of different dangerous goods. Also, the regulations provide a way to communicate the class and level of danger associated with chemicals. These regulations were first introduced in 1985.

Communication system

TDG is a communication system that assists first responders to safely respond to accidental releases of dangerous goods during transportation. The communication system contains 3 main elements:

  1. Marking, labeling and placarding
  2. Documentation
  3. Employees/First Responder Training Emergency Response

The first step is to establish if a product is dangerous or not. Once this decision is made, the system follows step 1 through 3. Classifying the product or substance is the foundation of how the communication system will work.

WHMIS vs. TDG

WHMIS is another communication system that protects all workers who may be exposed to chemical products. WHMIS (Workplace Hazards Materials Information System) deals with the effects of both immediate and long-term exposure to chemical/hazardous goods. TDG was developed to protect the public from the exposures of chemicals during the shipment of these products. TDG deals with controlling the immediate hazards of exposure to hazardous materials in the event of a spill or leak during transportation. Another difference between the two are WHMIS has 6 classes within the TDG has 9 classes within it.
